Historical Waitangi Tribunal inquiries

Representing claimants in historical Waitangi Tribunal inquiries.

An historical inquiry concerns Crown acts and omissions up until September 1992. Most of the Tribunal’s 37 historical inquiries have been completed, with just 3 remaining, the Porirua ki Manawatu District Inquiry, the Reconvened Muriwhenua Land inquiry and the North-eastern Bay of Plenty District Inquiry. The Waitangi Tribunal is currently writing final reports for the Taihape: Rangitīkei ki Rangipō District Inquiry and for the Te Paparahi o Te Raki (Northland) District Inquiry. The Tribunal’s historical inquiries can cover many issues including sovereignty claims, Native Land Court claims, Crown land purchasing claims, Māori education, the loss of te reo Rangatira, environmental claims, waahi tapu claims, public works takings, healthcare and many others.

It is not too late to apply for a Waitangi Tribunal remedies hearing in these remaining inquiries. Remedies hearings can lead to the return of State assets such as forests, farms, education lands and railway lands to the original, Māori landowners. Legal aid is usually available and you need not have been a claimant. Let us know if you’re interested and we will discuss your remedies hearings prospects with you. Phone 0800 37 10 37.

If you have been through the Waitangi Tribunal historical claims process and you are now looking to settle your claims, Tāmaki Legal can assist you with the settlement negotiations.
